| The boutique towns of Greater Toronto are pockets of small-town life that offer a quaint contrast to nearby urban areas. Located in Mississauga and the York Region, Toronto’s boutique towns are celebrated for their fall festivals, Canadian heritage and Main Street shopping.
Unionville and Markham Village are neighboring villages within Markham, the largest of the York Region’s communities. Just 20 minutes from downtown Toronto, Unionville attracts more than one million visitors every year with its horse-drawn carriage rides, heritage train rides, boutiques in historic buildings, nature trails and other things to do. Annual events at the two communities include the Markham Village Music Festival, the Markham Jazz Festival and Unionville’s Little Oktoberfest.
Kleinburg and Thornhill, a pair of scenic villages in the York Region, offer a relaxing escape from urban Toronto. Kleinburg provides a striking view from atop the Humber River Ridge, while Thornhill is split in half by the City of Vaughan and the Town of Markham. Favourite fall festivals include Kleinburg’s annual Binder Twine Festival and the Thornhill Village Festival.
Streetsville is the Greater Toronto community known as Mississauga’s Village in the City. A picturesque town set beside the Credit River, Streetsville has Mississauga’s largest collection of historic buildings, which include two 19th-century churches: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and Streetsville United Church. Visitors may enjoy Streetsville walking tours every summer and the Streetsville Spooktacular in the fall.
Mississauga’s Village on the Lake, Port Credit, is a charming village that lays claim to a 15-kilometre stretch of Lake Ontario’s Waterfront Trail. With its marinas, restaurants and boutiques, Port Credit makes a rewarding destination for Toronto day trippers. Special events in Port Credit include the Doors Open Festival, the Southside Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival, and the Mississauga Waterfront Festival, a top 50 festival in Ontario.
The Airport Area of Mississauga is home to the International Centre, which hosts many of the largest consumer shows and trade shows in Canada as well as concerts, weddings and other special events.
