York Region

Ontario’s York Region is located directly north of North Toronto and extends all the way to the southernmost shores of Lake Simcoe. A number of York Region attractions lie within easy reach of Toronto.

A favourite York Region attraction is Unionville, a heritage village just 20 minutes northeast of downtown Toronto. Known for the historic buildings, shops and restaurants that line its Main Street, Unionville invites visitors to enjoy nature trails, horse and carriage rides, heritage train rides and more. Another Toronto area heritage site, Black Creek Pioneer Village, is a living history museum that recreates a mid-19th century Ontario country village. Elsewhere in the York Region, the Kortright Centre for Conservation not only promotes the use of sustainable energy, it also offers more than 16 kilometres of trails suitable for hiking or cross-country skiing.

York Region shopping venues include Pacific Mall, advertised as North America’s largest indoor Asian Mall, and Vaughan Mills, a regional shopping centre that’s home to 250 stores, among them Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and the largest Tommy Hilfiger Outlet anywhere. Vaughan Mills also lays claim to two popular family attractions: NASCAR SpeedPark and the Lucky Strike Lanes bowling alley. Perhaps the biggest name in York Region entertainment belongs to Canada’s Wonderland. The metro Toronto theme park showcases more than 200 rides and attractions, including Splash Works water park and the largest, fastest roller coaster in Canada.

The York Region is also a welcome golf destination and is the home of several distinguished golf courses. Angus Glen Golf Club hosted the 2007 Canadian Open as well as the 2002 Bell Canadian Open, while St. Andrew’s Valley Golf Club received a Four Star rating from Golf Digest in 2007. Another award-winning Toronto area golf course, Copper Creek Golf Club, offers a scenic view of the Humber River Valley.

Also of interest to Toronto travelers are Magnotta Winery, the third largest winery in Ontario, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which features artwork by Tom Thomson, the Group of Seven, First Nations and other Canadian artists.
